hommage

hommage by Sylvie Bouchard, photo by Colin Boyd Shafer

Through a multi-sensory journey, hommage assembles hidden and compartmentalized childhood memories through the mind of both the young child and the adult, trying to make sense of a broken picture, like a puzzle that demands to be seen as whole.

hommage brings a personal story into a universal lens and is an ode to all who have lived painful beginnings.

Testimonial for hommage from composer Philippe Noireaut:

"This hommage powerfully and gently invites us on a journey that is as introspective as it is universal, as painful as it is playful, through the labyrinthine memories of a youth witnessing a father's distress. But the performance quickly reveals the strength of the creator and shows us the irrepressible and immensely resilient movement of an artist who paints an emotional panorama and subtly choreographs the walls of the family home as much as her own psyche—like a sensory exploration of family geography.

The references (delivered with a welcome neutrality) provide the necessary elements to understand the heart of the drama. The dramatic situation itself is evoked with immense delicacy and deep affection. The choreography, gestures, and words directly introduce us to the characters, with the superbly used aid of the family sweater.

What you show certainly doesn't shy away from pain, doesn't avoid suffering in any way, but confronts it head-on—this body that travels with slow, fluid, and weighty movements, with impressively sudden and shifting moods.

Pain is summoned, of course, but immediately exorcised through song and spat out in the multicolored drawings that rise up like a children's circle, a bulwark against the dark and unsettling creaks evoked at the beginning in the (admittedly superb) soundtrack and music."
